As part of working with slightly more involved art projects over this summer I tried out the idea of a lobster collage to end our summer. I had seen a neat idea for using hand and foot prints to make a lobster at Handprint and Footprint Arts. At the time I was working on designing future lessons around the collage illustrations of Eric Carle. This is summer in Maine and lobsters definitely go here, so an idea pooped up – do a collage of an undersea view with the lobster as the main focus.
The printing and fingerpainting had everyone’s interest, but when it came to doing the collage interest was mixed. I didn’t push at the time and they know everything is stored if they change their minds. A couple of children played around with the collage idea and had a positive experience. One young artist completed the project as originally envisioned. She did an incredible job.
Even without the “finished” project we had a fun, creative time and that is what really matters.
My sample, done a few days later, to see if I could create interest in the other children in finishing. Time will tell. Everything stored for a future raining day.
